What is Worker Memorial Day?

Worker Memorial Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the typically unspoken effect of earning a living by means of remembering those workers killed, disabled, injured or made unwell by their operate.

Are we performing sufficient?

Like ripples on the surface of a dark and stormy pond, the influence of accidents extends far beyond the instant victim, affecting co-workers, buddies and family members. Soon after all, we are all entitled to come home safe and healthy at the end of every single working day, and when a loved one doesn’t, it’s entirely natural that we’re upset or angry – especially following an accident that didn’t have to happen.shutterstock_126663773

I know we have come a long way right here in the United Kingdom, and that our well being and safety technique is admired and certainly viewed as an aspirational target for countries about the globe. However if you take time to look back, there is for me a sense of frustration that new generations of workers are becoming exposed to workplace situations which in the course of 2013/14 resulted in 1.2 million working people suffering from a work-connected illness.

Consequently, whilst it is ok to slap ourselves on the back sometimes and reward ourselves for the huge leaps we’ve taken, there is simply no space for complacency. Each mum or dad who went to operate last year and didn’t go house to their family final deserves far more than that. So does every single child who will wake up without a parent next year.

So this year, overlook the talk of ‘plateaus’ and ‘improving statistic’ &#8211 even one particular workplace death a year is unacceptable.

Basically place, we require to do far more.

Hunting beyond the UK

As practitioners and campaigners, RoSPA’s part is to feel about what we can do differently to encourage organizations in the wider planet to give occupational wellness and safety its location.

Tragically, accidental injury is a part of public overall health that is neglected in numerous developing nations, where industrial activity is rising, but the overall health and security of workers is hardly discussed. We hardly have to turn on the news to see yet an additional tragic occupational disaster overseas.

Yet we all have a function to play in making sure the creating globe wakes up to the threat of accidents. We can do this by sharing our personal person stories and experiences. After all, it is only by spreading the word that we can we can wake the planet up to a revolutionary idea&#8230 that accidents do not have to take place!
